1445781 Stiffening footwear uppers DUNLOP Ltd 6 March 1974 [7 March 1973] 10004/74 Heading A3B A footwear upper comprises a shaped singleply fabric which has been stiffened in areas extending laterally across the upper relative to the sole. The stiffening may be applied to the front portion of the shoe as two series of 3-5 spaced parallel bands extending from adjacent the sole on either side of the shoe and at an angle of 45-90‹ to the sole. The toe area of the upper may be reinforced by a triangular or crescent-shaped stiffened band. The stiffened areas are obtained by coating the fabric with a thermosetting polymer composition which contains a cross-linkable ureaformaldehyde or melamine-formaldehyde resin as well as pigments, thickening, and a wetting agent. Coating is effected by screen printing or by brushing through a template. Alternatively, a thermoplastic composition may be used and can be applied as above or by heat transfer to the fabric. The fabric may be cotton or a blend of nylon, polyester or polyvinyl acetate, and a thermoplastic sole may be compression or injection moulded on to the stiffened upper to form a shoe. |
