A paper feed mechanism for use with a paper sheet counter comprises a feed roller (1) and a follower roller (2). The feed roller is driven to rotate continuously in one direction, and the follower roller is forced into contact with the feed roller by a coil spring (3) so that it may be driven to rotate by the feed roller. A brake collar (4) is provided for applying a braking force to the follower roller, is preset with a range satisfying a relation between the coefficient of friction between the paper sheets (9) and each of the two rollers as well as by the contact pressure between the two rollers. The braking action of the follower roller prevents more than one of the paper sheets from being fed at one time.
