Two-stage polymerisation of liq. or solid monomers - initiated by ionised gas plasma

Polymerisation is carried out by (a) generating anionised gas plasma by an electric field in a confined gas volume, in contact with liquid or solid monomer; (b) propagating the polymerisation through the monomer volume by active centres produced on the interface with the plasma; (c) removing contact with the plasma, whole (d)) polymerisation continues until conversion is at least doubled and the required mol. wt. is achieved. Used esp. for polymerisation of liq. vinyl monomers, e.g. methyl methacrylate and solid cryst, monomers, e.g. 1,3,5-trioxane. Commercial moulding materials with high mol. wt. and purity can be produced, without crosslinking with the low energy consumption compared with usual plasma processes.
