<p>A process is provided for preparing bis(hydroxymethyl)methylphosphine oxide, comprising (1) thermally rearranging tris(hydroxymethyl)phosphine at elevated temperatures in the presence of a catalytic amount of a strong, non-reactive acid, or a source thereof, to obtain the desired bis(hydroxymethyl)methylphosphine oxide, and (2) recovering the latter compound from the reaction mixture.</p> |
