The bridge fitter is required because it is difficult to get a string instrument's bridge to fit the instrument's body.The bridge fitter is an aid for getting the bridge's feet to follow the shape of the instrument exactly, and for getting the right height profile on the bridge and the right place for the strings.The bridge fitter (see fig. IV and VI) consists of a fixture (2), on which a height profile (1) is mounted. There are also four sliding attachments (3 and 4) on the fixture. The fixture, the height profile and the sliding attachments are made of 1 mm brass plate.Two sliders (5) made of round 5 mm brass pass through holes in the sliding attachments. Two bridge holders (7) are soldered in the sliders' ends.The bridge fitter is pressed onto the instrument's fingerboard (8). The bridge is placed in the bridge holders, rubbed back and forth on sandpaper temporarily stuck on the instrument's body and thereby acquires the exact shape of the instrument.Finally the bridge fitter's profile and the strings' positions are inscribed on the bridge's upper part.The bridge fitter can be made of pressed steel or plastic. |
