The surface finishing of metal sheets which are short and thin, e.g. less than 0.2 mm thick and using magnetic powder is carried out without bending or damaging the sheets. Initially, the sheet (2) is advanced between feed rollers(3) towards the gap between the magnetic rollers(1) which are coated with the powder(4). On the other side are two delivery rollers(5), and at the instant when the sheet is gripped by both pairs of rollers(3, 5), the direction of rotation of the magnetic rollers is reversed. They thus oppose its travel(A). The sheet can then be released from the feed rollers(3) without damage or bending.
