The rapid action punch holder has a contoured shaft (1a) projecting axially from the closed end of a cylindrical cup (1b). A radial rib (8) separates the two sections, the barrel of the cup receiving a rotatable sleeve (10) retained by a circlip (12). A pin (19) through diametrical holes centres the tool, radially projecting balls (13) engaging a tool groove (20) to provides the axial lock. The balls move in when the sleeve is rotated and under the effect of ramped faces formed by grooves (10b) in the sleeve bore. Extending over segments of a sleeve circumference the grooves follow a curved profile of a lesser radius than the sleeve bore. A spring loaded ball catch (14, 15) in dicates when the balls are engaging the tool, i.e. indicating non coincidence of balls and grooves.
