[Also in Division F1] A bearing assembly comprising a bearing adjacent which is a hollow jacket having at least one chamber between its inner wall and outer porous wall, a wall member defining a space with the jacket on the side remote from the bearing, coolant being supplied to and filling the chamber(s) and flowing through the porous wall to the space. In the embodiment a main bearing 17 of a gas turbine jet engine is mounted between a static housing 18 and shaft 14 of composite high pressure shaft 13. Part 20 of the annular jacket is integral with, and part 30 attached to, the housing 18, the jacket sealing against the shaft at 21, 22, 31. Coolant, i.e. a mixture of gaseous nitrogen and air, is supplied continuously through ducts 36, 34, 35 to the inter-connected chambers 23, 25, 27, 32 passing through the porous walls to space 40 and thence to outlet tube 43. Oil mist is supplied by duct 51 to bearing 17, thence through the space between jacket and shaft and splined connections 62, 56 to scavenger tube 57. Oil mist is also supplied to bearing 16 which is between composite high and low pressure shafts. The wall member 41 forms a thermal radiation shield and may seal against the shaft 13.
