The end section of a dental handpiece is made readily detachable so that a different type of working head can be substituted as require. The principle may be applied to handpieces which are mechanically pneumatically or electrically driven. The handpiece shown has an air turbine 49, Fig. 1, mounted axially in a straight head 1 and the head is attached to the rear portion 2 of the handpiece by a spring loaded bayonet connection 6, 7. This head may be readily detached and replaced by the angle-type head shown in Fig. 2, which has the turbine 49 mounted in the end portion 11 of the casing. In each case the supply conduit 13 and exhaust conduits 16, 17 are aligned with similar conducts 12, 14, 15 in the handpiece part 2, the joint being sealed by a perforated washer 20.
