The engine has a cylinder with an inlet valve (9) and an exhaust valve (10) in the head. A swirl valve body (36) is inserted into a tapered hole (34) in the cylinder head between the inlet and exhaust valves. It holds a valve disc (42) which is opened by the suction in the cylinder. A rich mixture (63) enters the body through radial passages (54) which communicate with axial passages (50). When the disc (42) opens it uncovers these and allows flow through a central bore (38) into the cylinder. The sparking plug (26) screws into the top of the valve body (36).
