Gas mixts. contg. CO and H2, pref. with low sulphur content, are methanised in two stages, with intermediate reaction in a fluidised catalyst bed. Used for prodn. of a natural gas substitute. Higher hydrocarbons are formed in the intermediate zone, giving the product gas a higher calorific value, and allowing gas mixts. with higher content of N2 and/or H2 to be used.
