Coated shaped articles, e.g. films, sheets and moulded articles, of alkenyl aromatic hydrocarbon polymers having a coating on at least one surface are characterized in that the coating consists of or contains a substantially water-soluble methyl cellulose. The preferred polymers or copolymers comprise at least 50% by weight of at least one alkenyl aromatic hydrocarbon of formula <FORM:0968311/B1-B2/1> where Ar represents an aromatic hydrocarbon radical or an aromatic halohydrocarbon radical of the benzene series, and R is hydrogen or methyl, e.g. homopolymers of styrene, alpha-, ortho-, meta- and para-methylstyrene, ar-ethylstyrene, ar-vinylxylene, ar-chloro- or ar-bromo-styrene; copolymers of two or more such hydrocarbons with minor amounts, based on the total monomer weight, of olefinic compounds such as divinylbenzene, methyl methacrylate or acrylonitrile. Examples of suitable methyl cellulose are given. The coating may have a weight of at least 0,002 mgm/sq. inch, e.g. from 0,007 to 0,033 mgm./sq. inch. The coating composition may comprise an inert liquid carrier, e.g. water, and may contain at least 0,1% by weight, e.g. from 0,1 to 10% by weight, of methyl cellulose. The composition may be applied by brushing, dipping, spraying, roller coating or by doctor blade, to provide a thickness when dried of from 0,1 to 1,0 mil. (2,5-25 microns). The surface of the article may be washed with detergent or solvent prior to coating. The coating may have anti-fogging, anti-scratch, and anti-blocking properties and may be resistant to solvents. |
