1,015,302. Sealing ring; pipe joints. CENTRE DE RECHERCHES DE PONT-A-MOUSSON. April 5, 1963 [April 27, 1962], No. 13599/63. Headings F2B and F2G. An elastic sealing ring R, in a joint between bell and spigot pipe elements T1, T2 each of which is provided with a rigid sheath 1 or la terminating at a distance d from its ends, comprises in its underformed state a body 4 of polygonal cross-section having an axially extending lip 5 which terminates in a bulge portion 6 and is constricted adjacent the body 4 to which it is connected internally by a step 12 having a radial height substantially equal to the thickness of the sheath 1 and externally by a shoulder 8 in a region roughly midway of the radial thickness of the body. The inner peripheral surface of the body 4 has a frusto-conical portion 9 and a cylindrical portion 11 adjacent the step 12. The sheath 1 is of thermoplastic material such as P.V.C. and has a radial thickness e equal to or smaller than that of the step 12. When assembling the pipes T1, T2, Fig. 2, the body 4 of the ring is placed in a recess 3 in the bell end of the pipe T2, the lip 5 extending through the frusto-conical entrance 2 of the bell. The spigot end of pipe T1 is then inserted through the ring R until the sheath 1 abuts against the step 12 in which position the radially extended lip 5 and the compressed body 4 provide respectively external and internal sealing of the joint. The step 12 also prevents electrical contact between the two pipes while allowing axial expansion thereof. |
