A vehicle for use over a prepared track and supported by cushions of gas has wheels which may serve to guide it on the track or may be extended to. serve as road wheels for driving and steering the vehicle on a road. A cushion 10 is formed beneath the vehicle by lift fans driven by one power plant, another plant being provided for driving the road wheels which in Fig. 4 are shown retracted to inclined," positions 4a to co-operate with inclined walls 15 of a track. The wheels may be retracted into a common horizontal plane to engage onopposite sides of a central guide rail on the track. The track and the co-operating base of the vehicle may be formed as a shallow V for the cushion, the road wheels being wholly retracted in the air cushion mode. Propulsion of the vehicle over the track may be by linear motor by driven wheels or by an air propeller. Air brakes may be provided and the cushion may be contained wholly or in part by flexible skirts and/or fluid curtains.</p> |
