Insulating system for TV CRT - increases hv isolation of electrodes by causing discharge to melt projections on electrode surface

The insulating system increases the isolation of electrodes in order to protect the t.v. c.r.t.'s cathode from damage. Isolation is increased by generating a h.v. discharge between opposing electrodes before the tube is completed. The discharge occurs in air or in an inert atmosphere at normal atmospheric pressure. The discharge is produced before the electron gun is fitted into the glass tube or it may be produced after fitting. The discharge melts projecting parts of the surface of the electrodes thereby making those surfaces smoother.
