A safety binding for a ski has a toe fixing (5) which holds the ski boot rigidly in all directions. The heel fixing (6) allows the ski boot to move sideways in the event of the skier striking an obstacle with a sideways force (S). With the usual type of ski safety fixing the heel fixing is placed beyond the edge of the booth heel. By bringing this fixing forward to a distance (La1) from the toe fixing the moment arm about the toe fixing point (11) is reduced and so the force required to release the boot from the ski is also reduced.
