Free radical polymerisation of (meth)acrylic acid mixed with NH3 and finely-divided ZnO(OH)2 in water, uses sufficient NH3 and Zn cpd. to form a complex with the polymer formed, which renders the polymer soluble in water, gives a clear aq. alkaline emulsifier-free polymer soln. which forms clear films when cast on a substrate and dried or hardened. Poly-Zn-ammonium (meth)acrylate is produced more easily in this way than by addn. of ZnO to poly-ammonium (meth)acrylate. No emulsifier, soap or surfactant and no costly and hazardous organic solvent is needed, whilst the hazards associated with bilk polymerisation are also avoided. The soln. obtd. is useful for coating metals, woven and nonwoven textiles and paper and gives water-resistant, hard coatings.
|
