The jaw adjusting levers are mounted in the chuck body and are operated in pairs via compensating levers (8) to allow for irregularities in the workpiece which is being clamped. The compensating levers pivot about pins mounted on the chuck piston (10) and are secured in a central position by a locking member. The locking members are in the form of bolts (25) which are mounted in a bore (10a) in the chuck piston and are pushed into the locking position by a disc (26).
