The two tape rells are mounted on either side of a partition dividing the cassette housing (10) into two chambers of identical width. The cassette housing is open on two opposite narrow sides. In the chambers are provided reel cores for insertion of a tape reel on each one. The magnetic tape extends through the partition from one reel to the other. The housing one narrow side has a closable aperture. The partition with all mounted components is longitudinally displaceable, in order to form a tape loop. When the magnetic tape should be used in a recorder withou cassette receptacle the partition can be removed from the housing and the tape reels removed from the cores. Brakes are provided for the reel cores to prevent tape loosening during transport and storage, which are automatically applied when the cassette is removed from the recorder.
