In a new process for the prodn. of aromatic acyl cyanides of the formula Ar-CO-CN (I) (where Ar is an aromatic hydrocarbon residue opt. substd. by residues which are inert under the reaction conditions) by reaction of aromatic hydrocarbons of the formula Ar-H (II) with cyanogen NC-CN (III) in the presence of a catalyst and hydrolysis of the resulting iminoaroyl cyanide with aqs. mineral acid the reaction is carried out in is not ca 90 wt.% HF as solvent and catalyst, opt. in the presence of a co-catalyst (pref. BF3), at ca 20-120 degrees C (pref. ca 40-80 degrees C). (I) are partic. useful as intermediates for dyes, pharmaceuticals and plant protection agents. Process enables (I) to be obtd. directly from the parent hydrocarbons, and pollution problems are minimised.
