Apparatus for cooling hot rolled bar has a channel (1) with a removable cover. A body of water (10) is confined in the channel (1) by downwardly directed water curtains (17, 18, 19) provided by nozzles (14, 15, 16). In order that the body of water is properly confined, and that the moving bar does not entrain water with it, the cover of the channel is divided into sections (6, 7, 8, 9) separated by slits (11, 12, 13) extending the full width of the channel. High pressure nozzles (14, 15, 16) direct the water curtains through these slits, so that the curtains extend the full width of the channel.
