The motor vehicle headlight unit masking due to internal reflections within the quartz glass envelope of the halogen lamp is eliminated without adverse effect on the light output. The reflector (10) has upper (11) and lower (12) regions separated by a partition line (13) and a filament mask. The filament mask has two parts on opposite sides of the incandescent filament (15). Each thin masking plate has a folded edge for stiffening against bending. These plates can be made by injection moulding.
