The safety valve has an inlet port (2) for the hydraulic fluid which is admitted to the cylinder. The cylinder contains a spring loaded piston valve (10) with a bleed hole (13). The valve rests on the sides of the cylinder (7) which rests against the locating ring (15). The piston (5) has a push rod (6) and is loaded by the spring (9). The valve can be opened by applying hydraulic pressure through the port (20) to move the piston (5).
