The engine (1) of a heavy goods vehicle has an exhaust manifold (6) which contains a throttle (7). The throttle is closed when the engine is to be braked. A centrifugal compressor (15) has a sun and planet gear coupling (18, 16, 19) to the crankshaft of the engine. A brake (20) round the outer gear acts as a clutch which engages and disengages the coupling. - The compressor is coupled to the engine for additional braking effect. Part of the compressor discharge passes through a throttling valve (13) into the suction manifold (12) to increase the pumping load on the engine. To remainder is blown off (21) to atmosphere.
