In a slag removal and quenching apparatus the quenching means is located below the slag tap and a water reservoir, located within the quench chamber is provided with means to permit depressurisation and discharge of slag and water to atmosphere. As shown in the drawing the gasification plant includes a spiral pipe issuing water in jets towards a slag stream issuing from a slag tap which shock cools the slag which forms a frit that drops into a water reservoir.
