Compounds of the formula <FORM:1072725/C2/1> (wherein R and R1 are alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkaryl groups or, together with the adjacent carbon atom, are a mono-, di- or tri-cyclic carbocyclic group, R11 an alkyl, or aralkyl group, or an aryl alkaryl or other mono- or polycyclic carbocyclic group; and Y is a C2- 8 alkylene radical separating the attached oxygen atoms by 2 or 3 carbon atoms), all of which except those wherein R, R1 and R11 are all alkyl, are novel, are prepared by reacting compounds of the formula <FORM:1072725/C2/2> with Grignard reagents containing the group R11. When the ketals are unsymmetrical primary alcohols are formed. Examples are given, and the 3,5-dinitrobenzoate of 2-(1-methyl-cyclohexoxy) -ethanol is described. Ketal starting materials are prepared from the appropriate carbonyl compounds and the appropriate glycols. |
