1483984 Fabric softener compositions AZOTE ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES SA 12 May 1975 [6 June 1974] 19931/75 Heading D1P A fabric softening composition comprises the mixture of an imidazolinium salt I wherein R and R' which may be the same or different, are aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals of 12 to 20 carbon atoms the radicals being saturated or unsaturated, and linear or branched, and R 1 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and a diamidoamine salt II of formula: where R, R' and R 1 are as defined above and B is an acid. R and R' are exemplified as stearyl, oleyl and lauryl, R 1 as methyl and ethyl, A and B as chloride, sulphate, methylsulphate and ethyl sulphate. Preferably the composition contains 10 to 40% II and 60 to 90% I. I may be formed by condensation of fatty acids with diethylene triamine followed by cylisation and quaternisation and the diamidoamine salt II can be obtained from I by alkaline hydrolysis. Preferably however the mixture of I and II is prepared directly from diethylene triamine and a fatty acid or mixture of fatty acids (e.g. hydrogenated tallow acids) and heating at a time and temperature low enough to give incomplete cyclisation. The composition may be used as 1 % aqueous solution. The diamidoamine salt counteracts the hydrophobic character of the imidazolinium salt thereby decreasing yellowing and soiling of the softened fabrics. Fabrics of cotton, other natural fibres or synthetic fibres, or mixtures thereof may be treated. |
