A refractory lining for the wall and floor of a furnace consisting of a stack of bricks in superposed layers such that the joints between bricks are in different planes, is constructed so that the stack is made with free joints and without any jointing material. Each brick carries >=4 identical bosses on its upper part and an equal number of hollows in its lower part. The hollows are in the same vertical as the bosses. The size and the shape of the hollows and the bosses are such that a boss of one brick can enter the hollow of another brick placed over it. The disposition of the bosses in relation to their neighbours and to the edges of the brick is calculated so that the bosses of a brick can enter the hollows of four bricks of the upper layer. Breakage of the refractory lining because of fatigue or thermal shock due to changes in dimensions induced by changes in temp. are avoided.
