The diesel engine driven heat pump is used to operate heat consuming domestic appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers and laundry driers. The water or air supply of the domestic appliance is in heat exchanging contact with the pressure side of the refrigerant circuit of the heat pump. It is also in heat exchanging contact with the cooling water of the diesel engine and the exhaust gases of the diesel engine. The water is supply of the domestic appliance is fed initially from a hot water boiler of the heat pump system or brought into heat exchange contact with it. Subsequently it is operated with the diesel engine exhaust gases.
