The outlet box maintains the fire retarding properties of a thin or hollow wall construction when pierced by a socket outlet. A conventional socket outlet (3) designed for fixing into a thin wall is surrounded by an extra casing (2) made of metal. The space between this casing and the socket housing is filled with a fire resistant material which foams when exposed to heat. If a fire causes the socket to degrade and soften then the heat is sufficient to activate the foaming material. It expands to seal the opening in the wall against the fire.
