Imidazoles (I; R1, R2= one is H or low alkyl, the other is nitro, R3= low alkyl, hydroxy low alkyl, low alkoxy low alkyl, low alkyl sulfonyl, R4 = oxo or thioxo, X= carbonyl, thio carbonyl, sulfinyl, sulfonyl, ALK = C2-4 low alkylene), and some related compds., useful as bactericide, were prepd. by reaction of II (z = esterificated hydroxy group, free or esterificated mercapto group, ammonium group, sulfinyl, sulfonyl) and III.
