A closed, opt. thermally insulated vessel has one inlet duct and more than one, esp. two outlet ducts each with overflow edges or weirs at the same height. The vessel has its bottom part constructed as a pneumatic or vibrating loosening device for the material, the outlet openings each lead into discharge ducts esp in the form of shutes. A uniform residence time of the contents of the furnace is assured. The alumina is easily removed.
