Organo-phosphorus pesticides and nerve gases analysis - by chemiluminescence using chloride ions to increase sensitivity

In the analysis of toxic alkyl phosphates based on measurement of the chemiluminescence effect of the reaction between 3-aminophthalic acid hydrazide (APAH), H2O2 and alkyl phosphate in alkaline medium, sensitivity is increased by adding chloride ions. Pref. EDTA is added in a conc. of 2 x 10-4 M. Used in determn. of toxic alkyl phosphates such as nerve gases (e.g. Sarin and pesticides (e.g. parathion). Addn. of chloride ions increases the chemiluminescence effect for alkyl phosphates so that concns. in the nanogramme and sub-nanogramme range can be detected. Alkyl thiophosphate chemiluminescence is not enhanced by chloride ions, but background luminescence is suppressed by FDTAM so that lower concns. can be detected. The method permits qualitative analysis, since different organophosphorus cpds. give characteristic luminescence curves.
