When the called telephone station does not answer or is engaged, the number of the calling station is stored in a special store associated with the called station. Storage of the number of the unobtainable station is signalled, and is subsequently made available for establishing a connection. Each telephone station has an individual allocated store for the number of an unsuccessfully calling station, together with a display device for reproduction of a stored number. The stored number is recalled by a switching operation at the station. The number is erased, or the connection established by a further operation.
