The ignition circuit provides optimum ignition energy over a wide range of engine speeds. An energy storage circuit (34) contains a second discharge path (45) in addition to the discharge path passing over a threshold switch (23). The second discharge path contains a second switch (46) that discharges the storage circuit more slowly than the threshold switch at low engine speeds. The second switch comprises a transistor whose base is connected to the collector of a drive transistor (35), whose collector is connected to the storage circuit and whose emitter is connected to a supply line (4).
