Magnetic heads comprises >=1 magnet cores embedded in >=1 core frames. In one embodiment, the surface of the core facing the recording medium (e.g. tape) comprises a plasma-deposited magnetically conductive metal (I). In another embodiment, the part of the head surrounding the core is plasma-coated with a magnetically nonconductive material (II). (I) is pref. an amorphous alloy, esp. comprising 5 wt% Al, 10 wt.% Si and 85 wt.% Fe or 45 wt% Fe,50 wt.% Ni and 5 wt.% P. (II) pref. comprises 40 wt.% TiO2 and 60 wt.% Cr2O3. The heads ae inexpensive to produce, have a long life, and have a highly stable gap geometry w.r.t.temp. variations.
