Formation of grooves for sewing threads in rows of slide fastener members of plastic monofilament which have pairs of legs lying one on top of the other, is described. The fastener members are held in contoured hollows whilst an unheated press tool presses the upper leg into contact with the lower leg, and simultaneously deforms the upper leg to produce sewing thread grooves. The deformation speed is related to, but less than, the relaxation speed fo the material. The rows of members subsequently undergo a thermofixation process by means of hot air, infra-red radiation or ultrasonic vibration, which is confined to the region of the impressed sewing grooves. Smooth, deep groves are produced which protect sewing threads from abrasion but which do not reduce the strength of the fastener members.
|
