During machining of one (4) of the parts, to be paired, of a workpiece pair (3, 4), the reference piece (5), defining the pairing, of the next pair (5, 6) to be machined, is measured by means of a length measuring head (13). This measurement is fed as a reference measurement into a memory (7). In each case before the machining of the next pair (3, 4), the reference measurement is fed from the memory (7) to a control and display unit (9). During the subsequent machining of the workpiece (4), said unit compares the reference measurement with the measurement, of the workpiece (4), measured by means of a length measuring head (10). The feeding of a new reference piece (5) to the measuring head (13) and the combining of a ready-machined workpiece (2) with the reference piece (1) can take place during the machining process of a workpiece (4), as a result of which time is saved. <IMAGE>
