1-(2'-Aroyl-1'-ethyl)-2-(4''-acetamido-1''-piperazinylmethyl)benzimid azoles of formula I, in which Ar and R are defined as in Claim 1, are obtained by condensation of 4-acetamidopiperazine with the corresponding 1-(2'-aroyl-1'-ethyl)-2-(chloromethyl)benzimidazole. The latter is obtained by chlorination of the corresponding 2-hydroxymethyl compound with SOCl2. The compounds of formula I can be used as a medicament in the treatment of gastroduodenal ulcers, hyperchlorhydrias, visceral spasms, asthma, hypertension, oedemas and aches of various origins and especially inflammatory aches. <IMAGE>
