The apparatus has a transport device (11, 12, 17) which transports the material over an electrooptic measuring rod (25) arranged transversely to the transport direction, a clock pulse generator (22) triggered synchronously relative to the transport path, an electronic control mechanism (36), a counter (61) for the clock pulses and an arithmetic element (51) which calculates a mean width from two width measurements and the length from the contents of the counter (61), as well as the useful surface of the material from the mean width and the length. Given a specific number of clock pulses after the start of the passage of the material in front of the measuring rod (25), a first device (36, 74) stores a first width measurement in a first intermediate memory (88), and after the passage of the material in front of the measuring rod a second device (36, 77, 79) stores a second width measurement, measured at a specific number of clock pulses before the end of the passage, in a second intermediate memory (89).
