Assembly has fuel rods (12) and guide tubes (16) held by spaced grids (14). The tubes have top and bottom nozzles (18,26), and bottom end plugs (36) each of which has a threaded opening and a fastener (30) connecting the bottom nozzle and plug. The fastener has a threaded shank extending into the plug, and sections or progressively reduced diam. to facilitate entry of the fastener into the plug. The fastener head (50) has a cavity (60) for receiving a tool, and a part which looks to the nozzle to prevent accidental withdrawal during operation. The assembly can be removed and replaced, after partial burnup in a reactor core.
