Sterile articles for the surgical repair or replacement of living tissue, absorbable by living tissue, are formed from polyhydroxyacetic ester (also known as polyglycolide or polyglycolic acid). One aspect of the invention relates to sterile surgical sutures having from 1 to 4, 000 dernier and made from solid, stretched and oriented polyhydroxyacetic ester. The ester in monofilament or polyfilament form may be attached to a surgical needle and then enclosed in a sterile package, e.g. transparent polyester-polyethylene packets, and sterlized by ethylene oxide permeating the seal line. Other substances may be present, e.g. dyes, antibiotics, antiseptics, anaesthetics and antioxidants, and the surfaces of the fibre can be coated with a silicone or beeswax. The polyhydroxyacetic estor may also be formed into tubes or sheets for surgical repair and may also be spun as thin filaments and woven or felted to form absorbable sponge or gauze.ALSO:Polyhydroxyacetic ester is spun as thin filaments and woven or felted to form sponges or gauge which are absorbable by living tissue and used for surgical repair. |
