Mfr. of activated titanium tri:chloride used as catalyst - by treating violet titanium tri:chloride with titanium tetra:chloride and a di:alkyl ether

Activated TiCl3 is prepd. by reducing TiCl4 at 5 degrees C with a trialkylaluminium cpd. or a dialkylaluminiumhalide to give brown TiCl3. This is then converted into purple TiCl3 by heat treatment at >120 degrees C and the purple TiCl3 is then treated with added TiCl4 and a dialkyl ether with 2-8C alkyl gps. The process gives a TiCl3 having equal activity and sterospecificty to known purple TiCl3 made by known b brown-violet conversion, and which has improved morphology in that the particle size is smaller and can be varied over wider limits from the av. value. The catalysts are useful in olefin polymerisation, giving improved removal of liq. diluents (i.e. liquefiable monomers) in block polymerisation processes or liq. inert hydrocarbon diluents in other slurry polymerisation processes, and improved dispersion of amorphous copolymer phase in the crystalline homopolymer phase in the prodn. of propylene copolymers with improved brittleness at low temps.
