The device has two welding jaws which can be pressed together and one of which is a pressing bar (15) provided with an elastic covering (16) and the other is a supporting rail (11) equipped with a heater band (19). A projecting severing ridge (21) runs between the edge strips (20), serving as welding zones, of the heater band (19). Opposite the effective edge of the severing ridge (21), the edge strips (20) are set back the more greatly with increasing distance from the severing ridge (21). Thus, when the pressing bar (15) is pressed down, an outwardly decreasing pressure is produced on the weld seam, so that unintentional severing or weakening of the film material adjacent to the weld seam is reliably prevented.
