A comb(4) is movable with respect to a rear fixed part of the collector by a jack(7). The comb closes automatically following introduction of the collector over a succession of bales. An ejector discharges the bales at the time of release. The automatic closing mechanism includes a valve located between the jack and an oil reservoir. On operation the valve releases oil from the jack ensuring automatic closure of the comb. The valve is operated by a swinging blade which is pushed rearwardly by the bales.
