Ethyl ester prodn. from ethylene and carboxylic acid - in liq. phase in special solvent

Liq. phase prodn. of ethyl esters is carried out by reacting ethylene under pressure with >=1 carboxylic acid in the presence of an acid catalyst and >=1 inert, stable, dissociating solvent capable of increasing the acidity of the reaction medium, esp. tetramethylene sulphone (TMS). The process gives high yields (e.g. 30-100% based on carboxylic acid) under relatively mild conditions (e.g. 130-160 degrees C and 20-60 bars).
