An electrical apparatus, e.g. a transformer Fig. 1 or a machine Fig. 2, has a core comprising a plurality of laminated or wire parts connected together with gaps 3 or 16 between them, each gap containing an insert 6 of substantially non-magnetic material. The magnetic resistance across each gap at different positions along its length or depth varies inversely with the differences in the lengths of the magnetic lines of force intersecting it at these positions, the product of gap width and length of lines of force being preferably substantially the same at all points. The core surfaces bounding each gap may be mutually inclined or each insert may have a magnetic resistance which varies over its length or width. <IMAGE> |
