The paddle wheel comprises a rotationally symmetrical arrangement of blades (1) mounted on a central axle (2) terminating in a metallic spigot (3) which is concentric with a screw member (4) which acts as a drive. The bulk of the paddle wheel is made from plastics material with a specific weight just under 1 gm/cc., so that with the metallic attachments, including metallic blade retaining bolts (5), it has an average specific weight of about 1 gm/cc. so that in water or liquid of a similar density it is virtually weightless and therefore places a negligible load on the bearing.
