1,085,558. Moulding lugs on the end of tapes. E. W. BLISS CO. Sept. 29, 1965 [Feb. 19, 1965], No. 41378/65. Heading B5A. A plastics lug 114, provided with curved diverging sides 114a and 114b is moulded on to the end of a woven filament nylon tape 110 to facilitate the attachment thereof in parachutes and aircraft arrester gears. The end (124) of a tape 110 is squared and transverse threads (122) (Fig. 3, not shown) are cut and removed from a length (112) thereof and, after combing to orientate the longitudinal filamentary strands 120, the end of the woven tape 110 is masked by tape (142) and material (144) (Fig. 5, not shown) prior to impregnating the length 112 with curable material (152), e.g. rubber or epoxy resin or other synthetic or natural resin, in a pan (150) (Fig. 6, not shown), with complete wetting of the filaments being ensured by further resin (174) being applied between separated layers (170) (Fig. 7, not shown) by an applicator 172. The impregnated tape end 112 is then clamped between mould halves 190, 192 formed by baseplates 194, 210 on which are mounted contoured side members 196, 212, for defining the diverging sides 114a and 114b of the lug 114, and which are spaced apart by blocks (202), (204) (Fig. 10, not shown) with the thickness of tape 110 substantially matched by slot 222 defined by end rails 200, 216. The tape is drawn in the direction " b " to compact the filaments and the lug cured by heating lamps 230, 232. The invention is also applicable to the formation of a cement lug. The moulding may subsequently be filed to the required contour. |
