A method for the preparation of the pivaloyloxymethyl ester of cephalexin or pivaloyloxymethyl 7- [D(-) alpha -amino (phenylacetamido)]-3- methylcef-3-em-4-carboxylate of formula (I) and its optically active and non-active pharmacologically acceptable salts in which the starting compound is either penicillin G or penicillin V, as such or as a salt.
